Slave - A Question of Freedom

Mende Nazer

Welcome to Feelgood

Following on from our critically acclaimed, MEN Award-nominated production of Macbeth in 2009 and Eloquent Protest IV at the Duke of York’s Theatre, London, we are delighted to announce our next production.

Slave - A Question of Freedom will premiere at The Lowry on 23rd November 2010. This is the extraordinary story of a young Sudanese girl, Mende Nazer, who was kidnapped and sold into slavery and how, in September 2000, she finally escaped to freedom.

Adapted for the stage by Caroline Clegg and Kevin Fegan from Mende / Damien Lewis’ best-selling autobiography, Slave (Virago Press), it is told as a feast of storytelling, music, dance and film celebrating the ancient Nuba culture, Mende’s indomitable spirit and as a famine of the inhumanity and horror of the contemporary slave trade.

Mende’s story challenges us all to consider what is it to be free? at a time when there are TEN times more people enslaved in the world than at the height of the transatlantic slave trade.

“ .. a profound meditation on the human ability to survive virtually any circumstances.”

Slave - A Question of Freedom

In the Nuba mountains of contemporary Sudan, life is still a good fire around which stories are told. Until the men on horseback come, burning and raiding the village.  Women are raped, men murdered and children like Mende are stolen and sold into domestic slavery. Slave is the shocking story of an extraordinary young woman, Mende Nazer, who was eventually sold on to a family in London, where she escaped in the year 2000 only to face a new struggle for political asylum.

The Show:  Mende’s story is adapted for the stage for an ensemble cast of 8 British and African actor / musicians. It is told as a feast of storytelling, music, dance and film, celebrating the ancient Nuba culture and Mende’s indomitable spirit, and as a famine of the inhumanity and horror of the contemporary slave trade.  Why are there now ten times more people enslaved than at the height of the transatlantic slave trade?
